Course Overview

The Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm) is a foundational course designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare sector. This program focuses on equipping students with the basic knowledge and skills required for pharmacy practice, including the preparation, dispensing, and appropriate use of medication. Course Duration: The D.Pharm program typically spans two years, divided into four semesters. Each semester comprises theoretical instruction, practical training, and project work to provide a comprehensive education in pharmacy.

Eligibility

Completion of 10+2 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Mathematics as core subjects. Minimum aggregate marks as specified by the respective universities or institutions (generally around 50% aggregate).

Curriculum Structure:

First Year:

  • Pharmaceutics-I: Basics of pharmacy practice, dosage forms, and pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry-I: Introduction to inorganic and organic chemistry relevant to pharmaceuticals.
  • Pharmacognosy: Study of medicinal plants and natural products.
  • Biochemistry and Clinical Pathology: Fundamentals of biochemistry and basic clinical pathology.
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology: Structure and function of the human body.
  • Health Education and Community Pharmacy: Concepts of health education and roles of pharmacists in community health.

Second Year:

  • Pharmaceutics-II: Advanced pharmaceutics including compounding and dispensing medications.
  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry-II: Advanced organic chemistry and pharmaceutical analysis.
  • Pharmacology and Toxicology: Study of drug actions, therapeutic uses, and toxicology.
  • Pharmaceutical Jurisprudence: Laws and regulations governing the practice of pharmacy.
  • Drug Store and Business Management: Management principles and practices in drug stores and the pharmaceutical business.
  • Hospital and Clinical Pharmacy: Roles and responsibilities of pharmacists in hospitals and clinical settings.

Practical Training:

  • Extensive laboratory work to gain hands-on experience in compounding, dispensing, and analyzing pharmaceutical products.
  • Internship/Apprenticeship: Practical training in a hospital pharmacy, community pharmacy, or pharmaceutical industry to gain real-world experience.
